SYRACUSE, N.Y. — A county district attorney who has sharply criticized police and Syracuse University for their handling of sexual-abuse allegations against fired assistant basketball coach Bernie Fine said Wednesday that he cannot bring charges but thinks two men who accused the coach of sexual abuse are credible.
Onondaga County District Attorney William Fitzpatrick said the statute of limitations has passed with respect to claims brought by Bobby Davis and his stepbrother Michael Lang for abuses they said occurred in the 1980s. Regarding a third accuser, Zach Tomaselli, 23, Fitzpatrick said he has turned over records that may call into question Tomaselli’s claim that Fine abused him in 2002 in a Pittsburgh hotel.
Fine, 65, had been Hall of Fame coach Jim Boeheim’s top assistant since 1976 and has adamantly denied wrongdoing. He was fired Nov. 27. The Associated Press
