Nothing screams “rebellion” like a punk rocker at his loudest, and nothing coos “fat and happy establishment” like a father.
Put those two together — give a kid to a man with bondage tattoos — and you have one big daddy of a cultural incongruity.
That’s the upshot of “The Other F Word,” Andrea Blaugrund Nevins’ documentary about guys who’ve learned firsthand that nothing rocks your world like having a baby.
“How did we go from rebelling against our own parents to becoming parents ourselves?” asks Jim Lindberg, frontman for Pennywise and father of three perfectly darling girls.
Lindberg, who wrote a book on the subject called “Punk Rock Dad,” is at the center of this sweet, revealing and proudly foul-mouthed ethnography. The movie visits him at home as he packs (his daughters hand him a Barbie for the road), then follows him on tour as he belts out profanity to a crashing beat.
Also featured are Flea (of the Red Hot Chili Peppers), Ron Reyes (Black Flag), Lars Frederiksen (Rancid), Art Alexakis (Everclear) and scads of others — including Fat Mike (NOFX), seen carrying his 4-year-old from her extremely pink bedroom into the black one he shared with his wife.
Those who prefer their rock gods antisocial and seething might want to avert their eyes, and cover their ears, as folks tear up describing the pain of their youths and the love they feel for their own kids.
