Air Force coach Troy Calhoun met with Texas A&M athletic director Bill Byrne on Tuesday to discuss the Aggies’ head coaching position, according to the Houston Chronicle.
Citing a source “with knowledge of the situation,” the Chronicle reported that Calhoun and Byrne met in New York City, where former Air Force coach Fisher DeBerry was being inducted into the College Hall of Fame.
The Gazette in Colorado Springs cited a source who said they “did not believe” Calhoun was interested in the A&M job, or the opening at North Carolina, which he has also been linked to. Calhoun could not be reached for comment.
Texas A&M fired coach Mike Sherman last week after he went 25-25 in four seasons, including 6-6 this season. Tim DeRutyer, A&M’s defensive coordinator and interim head coach, was an assistant under Calhoun at Air Force.
Houston’s Kevin Sumlin, Southern Mississippi’s Larry Fedora and Alabama assistant Kirby Smart are also candidates for the job, according to the Chronicle, with Sumlin believed to the front-runner. Texas A&M is expected to announce its coach by the end of the week.
Last offseason, Calhoun was linked to the vacancies at CU and the Broncos but he declined to be interviewed. He is 41-23 in five seasons at Air Force, including 7-5 this season. He’s led the Falcons to a bowl game each year.
Air Force plays Toledo in the Armed Forces Bowl on Dec. 28.
