Aspen winter wonderland. During the 12 Days of Aspen, from Dec. 20-31, downtown Aspen will be transformed into a winter wonderland. Visitors can enjoy free ice skating, concerts, carolers and entertainment for all ages. There will also be an appearance by Santa and his reindeer.
100th winter fest anniversary. The Grand County Winter Sports Carnival is a six-week celebration to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the first winter carnival in the western U.S. Events are scheduled from Dec. 30-Feb. 11, and will include ski jumping, skijoring and a snowshoe tournament, among other events.
Christmas Bird Count. The U.S. Forest Service will coordinate its 10th annual Christmas Bird Count with the National Audubon Society on Saturday. Volunteers survey a 15-mile diameter around the Granby area and collect population data on the area’s resident birds. Bird counters can choose to participate by motor vehicle, skis or snowshoes, and all birding skill levels and ages are welcome. To participate call 970-887-4108 or e-mail bmccormick@fs.fed.us.
