With five of last year’s key players away — three in China, two in free-agency limbo — the Nuggets had “a weird beginning of a weird season,” coach George Karl said after Friday night’s practice. “But it’s good to be back in the gym.”
The Nuggets had an energetic practice this evening, focusing on defense in their first time together on the court since losing in the first round to Oklahoma City last spring.
“We still have to come out here and be dedicated to defense, we have to be on the same page,” center Chris Andersen said. “I’m going to keep on saying defense – defense, defense, man – because that’s what is going to help get out into the open court and get layups.”
The team is still waiting to hear from Nene, the center who is a free agent. A source said he is weighing multiple offers, including a four-year, $60 million to $65 million offer from New Jersey, as reported by Yahoo Sports.
Arron Afflalo is also out there, a free agent the Nuggets hope to bring back. Though he’s restricted, he is getting contacted by numerous teams too.
“It’s definitely thin, it really is,” Denver guard Ty Lawson said. “I’ve been texting Arron and Nene. Hopefully they sign back with us. I have confidence.
“Nene, he’s one of the best big men in the league. He does some good things for us – to lose him at this point, right before the season starts, it would be tough for us.”
