A woman was injured in an apartment fire in Lakewood this afternoon.

The fire started at about 1:50 p.m. in an apartment at 12977 W. Cedar Drive, said District Chief Keith Schneider, a West Metro Fire Protection District spokesman.

The fire started in a second-floor unit and when firefighters arrived flames and heavy smoke were visible.

The victim, who was taken to a local hospital with injuries that do not appear to be life threatening, got out of the apartment on her own just before firefighters arrived.

“She got out of there just in time,” Schneider said.

The fire quickly spread to a third-floor unit, which was vacant, and into the attic before firefighters were able to get it out.

A garden-level unit was damaged by water and smoke.

About two dozen firefighters got the fire under control in about 20 minutes.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
