Ryan Miller, accused of shooting and killing a woman he dated briefly, faces a first-degree murder charge in the case.

Miller, 27, appeared in Denver County Court on Saturday, where he was advised of the charge and appointed a public defender, according to state court records.

As of Saturday evening, Miller had not been officially charged.

He was arrested Friday afternoon, after he allegedly shot a woman in the back of the head as she drove in the alley between the 1200 blocks of Elizabeth and Clayton streets in Denver’s Congress Park neighborhood.

The woman was taken to a nearby hospital, where she later died.

Friends identified the woman as Andrea Roan, 27, who they said recently ended a short relationship with Miller. Roan was an elementary school teacher, they said.

On Dec. 3, Miller was arrested in the same block as the shooting, in connection with a domestic-violence case and on suspicion of assault and false imprisonment.

Denver police have confirmed that the victim in the domestic-violence case is the woman who was killed Friday.

Authorities have not named Roan as the victim in either case.

A court hearing was scheduled in the domestic-violence case for Jan. 4.

Miller’s criminal history includes a 2010 felony case in Adams County. Miller was charged with felony kidnapping, sex assault and conspiracy charges in a case that was set for trial last month.

The case was dismissed Nov. 18, after the victim declined to proceed to trial, said Krista Flannigan, an Adams County district attorney’s spokeswoman.

The victim in the Adams County case is not the same woman who was killed in Denver, said Lt. Matt Murray, a spokesman for the Denver Police Department.
