NAIROBI, Kenya — Khalil Ibrahim, a Sudanese rebel leader, died Saturday of wounds he received in battle, the Sudanese government said.
Military officials said they had killed Ibrahim and several comrades during a shootout in the southern reaches of the country. Arab news networks reported that Ibrahim’s family had confirmed his death.
Ibrahim’s death would be an enormous blow to the Justice and Equality Movement, the group that he founded that had recently teamed up with other dissidents for a multipronged rebellion against the Sudanese government.
