American Football Monthly magazine, a publication for coaches based in North Palm Beach, Fla., named CSU-Pueblo’s John Wristen the NCAA Division II coach of the year Wednesday.
Wristen guided the ThunderWolves to an 11-0 regular-season record, to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference title and to the No. 1 national ranking entering the playoffs. CSU-Pueblo lost its playoff opener 24-21 to Minnesota-Duluth before 9,117 fans in Pueblo.
Oklahoma State’s Mike Gundy was the magazine’s choice as Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly Division I-A) coach of the year.
Wyoming welcomes Tormey. Washington State linebackers coach Chris Tormey has joined the Wyoming staff as secondary coach and defensive coordinator. The Cowboys announced Tormey’s hiring Wednesday.
Tormey replaces Alex Grinch, who left Wyoming to be the safeties coach at Missouri. Tormey played linebacker at Idaho from 1975-77 and coached the Vandals from 1995-99, compiling a 33-23 record in five seasons.
