Thoroughly modern Millicent
Anyone who scoffs at Southwestern style need only gaze at an old photo or two of Millicent Rogers, the Standard Oil heiress and Taos resident, to see its beauty. Rogers first visited in 1947 and fell in love with the climate, the landscape, American Indian jewelry and velvet broomstick skirts. Rogers is among “The Remarkable Women of Taos” being celebrated as part of a year-long campaign. Kicking off the event is “Millicent Rogers: The Power to Create, Collect and Inspire,” which opened Sunday at the museum named after Rogers. Other exhibits follow, including ones focusing on her jewelry, correspondence from Millicent to her sons, her clothing, art and rug collections. New Mexico artists will also be featured during the year. Details at

Skin deep
If the new year has inspired you to take better care of your skin, you’ll find plenty of encouragement from local spas and such stores as Ulta Beauty. The national retailer — with eight stores in the metro area — is offering daily specials through Jan. 21 as well as in-store events and demonstrations. The stores have exclusive products from such lines as Dermalogica, Benefit, Murad, Bliss and Philosophy, as well as in-store consultations and demonstrations. Dermalogica’s focus is on using the right products for the stage and age your skin is in. Among the company’s recommendations:
•When you’re in your 20s: Clean skin is healthy skin. Remove your makeup each day and use the right cleanser.
• In your 30s: Add a hydrating mask once a week.
•In your 40s: Drink enough water to keep skin hydrated.
•In your 50s: Menopause can trigger up to a 30 percent reduction in collagen. Talk to a specialist about products that can boost collagen production. See stores for details; visit
