Today’s question about the Broncos comes from James in New York.
Q: How do the Broncos plan to replace injured wide receiver Eric Decker?
A: Coach John Fox said Monday that Decker, who suffered a sprained left knee during Sunday’s playoff game against the Steelers, is considered “day to day.” But it’s unlikely that Decker will play Saturday night against the Patriots in the AFC semifinals.
The Broncos have two wide receivers on their practice squad — D’Andre Goodwin and Greg Orton. Either one could make a smooth transition to the active roster. Orton (6-foot-3, 199 pounds) has good size.
The Broncos usually have four wide receivers on their 53-player active roster. Taking only three into a playoff game would be a significant risk, especially with Eddie Royal and Matt Willis also being used as kick returners.
Demaryius Thomas — after his four catches for 204 yards, including the 80-yard touchdown play that beat the Steelers 29-23 in overtime — will draw a lot of attention from the Patriots.
New England coach Bill Belichick rarely lets you beat his team with your strengths. So Thomas should expect to see tougher coverage during Saturday’s game in Foxborough, Mass.
Willis could be a key player for the Denver offense. He has lined up at every wide receiver position, and Fox loves his toughness.
Look for Thomas and Royal to be the Broncos’ top two wideouts in a traditional formation, with Willis being the No. 3 guy. The Broncos also can throw to tight end Dante Rosario on the perimeter.
