Boulder County staffers are recommending that county commissioners deny an application to build a new underground pipeline to bring water from Carter Lake in Larimer County to the Boulder Reservoir.

The commissioners will take up the issue today.

The proposed project is being spearheaded by Northern Water to serve the city of Boulder, Left Hand Water District, Longs Peak Water District and town of Frederick — though the largest portion of the water pumped through the new pipeline would belong to Boulder.

The city of Boulder already draws water from Carter Lake, which stores water that is pumped from the headwaters of the Colorado River over the Continental Divide via two diversion projects: Colorado-Big Thompson and Windy Gap.
