The leaders of Germany and Italy on Wednesday urged the European Union to do more to promote jobs and economic growth to persuade European citizens to stay the course on painful reform measures needed to stabilize the euro currency.
Amid rising concern that growing unemployment, the deteriorating European economy and budget cuts that affect public services for ordinary Europeans could spark anti-European demonstrations across the continent, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti urged European leaders to devote time during the Jan. 30 European summit to discuss ways to promote economic growth in the 27-nation bloc.
