BOULDER — A Longmont man accused of strangling his wife in June pleaded not guilty Thursday in Boulder District Court to charges of attempted murder and first-degree assault.

Jeffrey Malm entered the plea at the end of a preliminary hearing in which Boulder District Judge D.D. Mallard ruled that prosecutors had enough evidence to pursue the felony charges. Malm’s attorney argued that the charges should be dismissed for lack of evidence that her client did not deliberate the attack, which is one of the elements describing the first-degree murder charge.

Dru Nielsen said Malm’s wife told police that he was “weird,” “freaked out” and “irrational.” She added that he is mentally ill and was not taking his medications at the time.
