The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. was born Jan. 15, 1929, and assassinated on April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tenn. Federal, state and city celebrations are held in January in his honor. Martin Luther King Jr. Day falls on Monday, Jan. 16 this year.
