
BOISE, Idaho — Mike Fitzgerald scored 16 points and Taylor Broekhuis had 15 points and 10 rebounds, helping Air Force to a 74-59 victory over Boise State on Saturday in the Mountain West opener for the men’s basketball teams.
Todd Fletcher scored 13 points and Taylor Stewart added 12 for the Falcons (11-4, 1-0 Mountain West), who won their fifth straight game.
The Falcons played without leading scorer Michael Lyons (injured ankle) for the sixth consecutive game. The loss was the first in 10 home games this season for Boise State, which made its Mountain West debut.
Northern Colorado 71, Eastern Washington 70
GREELEY — Tate Unruh hit two free throws with 12 seconds remaining to lift the Bears (6-10, 3-2 Big Sky) over the Eagles (9-9, 3-3).
Mike Proctor had 13 points and Tevin Svihovic added 12 for Northern Colorado, which used nine players, all scoring at least four points. UNC took only 35 shots but made 20.
Metro State 89, CU-Colorado Springs 78
COLORADO SPRINGS — Reggie Evans scored 28 points and Jonathan Morse added 21, leading the Roadrunners (14-1, 10-1) to a third straight win. Metro State led the Mountain Lions (7-10, 6-5) by 14 points at halftime.
Women
Boise State 81, Air Force 75. AIR FORCE ACADEMY — Down by 14 points in the second half, the Falcons (5-12, 0-2 Mountain West) rallied and cut their deficit to two points with 17 seconds remaining, but the Broncos (11-6, 2-0) closed out the game with four free throws.
Dymond James led Air Force with a season-high 24 points, adding 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. Michelle Ivey scored a career-high 18 points for the Falcons and teammate Alicia Leipprandt added 16.
TCU 79, Colorado State 71
FORT WORTH, Texas — The Rams (5-12, 1-1 Mountain West) allowed 15 points by the Horned Frogs (8-9, 1-1) to open the game before Colorado State scored its first field goal at the 15:41 mark. The Rams, down by nine at halftime, outscored the Frogs 35-34 in the second half but fell short.
Sam Martin led Colorado State with 28 points and teammate LaDeyah Forte set a career high with 17 points.
Wyoming 52, New Mexico 50
ALBUQUERQUE —Chaundra Sewell scored a team-high 26 points in the Cowgirls’ (5-10, 1-1 MW) first conference win of the season.
The Lobos’ (6-10, 0-2) Caroline Durbine tied the game 49-49 with 1:15 left, but on the next Cowgirls possession, Sewell completed a three-point play after being fouled, making it 52-49. New Mexico’s Caroline Durbine hit one of two free throws to bring UNM to within two, 52-50, with 38 seconds left in the game. After a shot-clock violation by Wyoming, the Lobos had one final chance with the clock winding down. Chaundra Sewell blocked a shot by Jayme Jackson to seal the Cowgirls’ win.
Metro State 55, CU-Colorado Springs 48
COLORADO SPRINGS — Caley Dow scored 19 points, including four points in the final two minutes, helping the No. 7 Roadrunnners (14-1, 10-1 RMAC) hold off a late run by the Mountain Lions (10-7, 5-6).
Dow also had 10 rebounds for her second straight double-double.
For the second straight night, Metro State held its opponent under 35 percent shooting as the Lions connected at just 34 percent.
