FOUNTAIN, Colo.—Officials say a man who rescued his dog from a frigid pond before breaking through ice on the surface has died at a Colorado Springs hospital.

The Gazette reports ( ) divers pulled the man from the pond in Fountain on Saturday and he was rushed to a hospital.

Someone called 911 to report the man had fallen through the ice while pursuing his runaway dog.

Fountain Fire Chief Darin Anstine tells the Gazette the man was able to throw his pit bull onto land before going under.

The man’s name hasn’t been released.

The Fountain Fire Department says the water below the ice was so murky that divers had to feel their way along the bottom to find the man.
