One man was struck several times and dragged to his death and a 17-year-old girl seriously injured in two separate automobile-pedestrian accidents in Aurora last night.
The man was struck and killed at about 6 p.m. in the intersection of East Colfax Avenue and North Peoria Street, authorities say. The girl was seriously injured two hours earlier.
The name of the dead man has not been released pending notification of family members.
The man was jaywalking west across North Peoria Street during a green light when a Saturn going south in the right lane collided with him, throwing him into the left lane, where he was struck by a Ford Escort.
The man was entangled beneath the Escort and was dragged about 200 feet. The driver later told detectives he did not realize the man was underneath the car at first.
The drivers of both cars involved in the accident remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation. There is no evidence of impairment or recklessness on the part of the two drivers, police say.
The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.
The southbound lanes of Peoria Street were closed for three hours during an investigation.
In the other accident, three people were walking east across North Laredo Street at East Colfax Avenue at 4 p.m. when a car made a left turn from westbound East Colfax Avenue to southbound North Laredo Street with it struck two of the pedestrians.
A girl was seriously injured in the accident. Her injuries are not considered life threatening. She was rushed to a local hospital for treatment. Her name was not released because she is a juvenile. A male victim was hit in the arm.
Authorities said the sun was low in the sky and was shining in the eyes of the driver. He told police he did not see the pedestrians.
The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation. He will be charged with failing to yield the right of way to a pedestrian in a crosswalk, according to a news release.
There was no indication the driver was under the influence of any alcohol or drugs.
