SAN FRANCISCO — Inc.’s online shoe and clothing retail unit, Zappos, disclosed a massive cyberattack over the weekend involving millions of user accounts, underlining the need for e-commerce sites to maintain transparency and user trust even as they are regularly targeted by hackers.
In a message and e-mail to employees posted on a company website Sunday, Zappos chief executive Tony Hsieh wrote that “a criminal” gained unauthorized access to Zappos’ internal network, and to at least 24 million customer accounts. Hsieh wrote, however, that the Zappos database that stores customer credit-card and payment data wasn’t affected.
