BOULDER, Colo.—A proposal from the Boulder city attorney to eliminate jury trials for most municipal tickets is drawing opposition.
Boulder City Attorney Tom Carr says the proposal is in response to a rash of jury trial requests from camping violators taking part in anti-Wall Street demonstrations.
According to the Boulder Daily Camera ( ), city officials are considering reducing fines from a $1,000 maximum to $500 and eliminating the possibility of jail time for 66 city offenses, including failing to clear snow from sidewalks, littering, sledding on open space and camping.
Opponents say officials are discriminating. They question why panhandling, hitting golf balls in city parks and not reporting a fire are still offenses that could result in jail time.
