Former Colorado State football coach Steve Fairchild returned to the NFL on Tuesday after he was hired to the staff of the San Diego Chargers, the team said.

Fairchild will hold the title of senior offensive assistant/special assignments. The Chargers at the same time promoted Hal Hunter to offensive coordinator, leaving an assistants job open for Fairchild.

The former CSU coach was fired after last season, his third consecutive 3-9 finish in four years. He will return to the San Diego area, where he was an All-American quarterback for San Diego Mesa Community College. He also worked in the area as an assistant with San Diego State. His resume includes NFL experience as an offensive assistant with the Buffalo Bills and St. Louis Rams.

At CSU, Fairchild brought in Chargers QB Philip Rivers during spring practices before last season to help Rams assistants with plans and concepts.
