GREENWOOD VILLAGE —  Mike Brookhart will resign today as the head football coach at Cherry Creek, according to a source close to the team, and the job opening undoubtedly will draw interest from Dave Logan, who was fired by Mullen last week.

Logan, unreachable for comment Tuesday, left Mullen last Wednesday after nine years and four state championships.

Brookhart, a 1979 Cherry Creek graduate, had taken over the program in 2008 while continuing to serve as the Bruins’ boys basketball coach. He had been the boys basketball coach for seven years. It’s a rare double found in state high school history, notably in big schools in the Denver area.

Brookhart guided the Bruins to the Class 5A title game in his first football season in charge, losing 20-16 to Mullen.

Formerly a 10-year assistant with the Cherry Creek football team, Brookhart also has dabbled in baseball scouting.

Brookhart replaced Greg Critchett, Cherry Creek’s first head football coach without any previous ties to the school. Cherry Creek opened in 1956.
