GIRLS SWIMMING

Get there early. If ever there was a dual meet that you had to see, Regis Jesuit vs. Cherry Creek on Saturday is the one.

The showdown marks the season debut of Regis Jesuit star Missy Franklin, a likely U.S. Olympian this summer at the London Games.

True to her word, Franklin has been as avid a member of the Regis Jesuit swim team as her international schedule will allow.

Franklin and the Raiders host the Bruins at 9 a.m.

CHSAA

Second that motion. The legislative council of the Colorado High School Activities Association meets today. On the agenda is a proposal that would have Class 5A football use a seeding committee to determine the postseason field.

Currently, the 5A postseason field is determined by a formula that is heavily weighted on straight wins and losses.

The legislative council will also consider a proposal that would require private school members to disclose financial aid information that compares the percentage of athletes on aid to the overall student body.

The meeting is at 8:30 a.m. at the Red Lion Hotel Southeast.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Can’t-miss 2A clash. Coach Dick Katte’s Denver Christian Crusaders (9-0) have been cruising right along atop the Class 2A coaches poll all season. They head north Saturday to Loveland for a crucial Mile High League game against No. 2 Resurrection Christian (10-0) and coach Bruce Dick.

Austin Lefebre (averaging 21.8 points per game), Alex Terpstra (15.3) and Connor Kroshus (11.3) are capable of lighting it up for the Crusaders, who have the tough task of trying to shut down the Cougars’ star trio of Bryan Wallman, Josh Mondt and Wyatt Simon.

Friday night in the Class 3A Patriot League, No. 3 Valley hosts No. 7 Eaton at 7 p.m. in Gilcrest.

WRESTLING

Top of the Rockies. Another power-packed tournament on the road to the state tournament in Denver is Friday and Saturday at Centaurus.

Keep an eye on the Arvada Bulldogs.

Coached by John Howes, Arvada has a team loaded with contenders. They include three top-ranked wrestlers in the latest On The Mat Rankings by Tim Yount. Garret Krohn (ranked No. 1 at 182 pounds) won a state title last season at 152. Marcos Peralta (No. 1 at 160 pounds) won a state title at 160 last season. Dwight Howes (No. 1 at 195 pounds) was a state champion at 189 last season.

There isn’t another wrestling room in the state that can match that firepower.

Top-tier tournament sites this week include Cañon City, Lake County, Northglenn, Paonia, Smoky Hill, Strasburg and Trinidad.
