GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.—Black Hills Plateau Production LLC is scaling back a 2009 proposal for developing natural gas on federal land near DeBeque.

The Bureau of Land Management is asking the public to submit comments on the new exploratory drilling proposal by Feb. 13, before the federal agency begins its environmental assessment of the plan.

Black Hills Plateau Production is now proposing drilling up to 24 wells from 12 well pads over three years beginning in October. The proposal would entail building some new roads and pipelines.

In 2009, the company had proposed drilling up to 107 wells from up to 67 proposed and 12 existing pads over a two- to five-year period.
