Consumer prices in the western United States were down 0.3 percent over the past month, but up 2.7 percent from a year ago, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said Thursday.

The West Region covered in the report includes 13 states, among them Colorado, Montana, New Mexico, Alaska, Arizona, Utah and Wyoming.

Over the past 12 months, the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers advanced 2.7 percent. Energy prices increased 7.2 percent, largely the result of an increase in the price of gasoline. The index for all items, less food and energy, advanced 2.0 percent since December 2010.
