“Real Steel”

**½

With its underground metal battlers and pro-circuit robots, this father-son saga, starring Hugh Jackman and Dakota Goyo, is rock ’em, sock ’em — and sweet. Ten-year-old Max has just lost his mother when he’s left in the care of his ex-boxer-turned-hustler dad. Jackman leaves plenty of room for the pint-size newcomer to upstage him, which Goyo does with precocious verve. The stubbornly wise son proves father to the man. Almost in spite of director Shawn Levy’s ham-fisted way with his characters’ emotions, this film delivers a nice uppercut to the bloated boy-meets-bot franchise. PG-13. 2 hours, 6 minutes.  Lisa Kennedy, The Denver Post
