Two 8-year-old Boulder County boys who wandered away from an elementary school, and headed for a nearby mall instead of going home, were found unharmed and safe.

The incident unfolded Thursday when the pair left Superior Elementary School, 1800 S. Indiana St., after a chess club meeting let out at about 5:30 p.m., according to a Boulder County Sheriff’s Office media release.

The boys were reported missing to authorities at about 7:15 p.m., the release said, and deputies and members of the Rocky Mountain Fire Protection District searched the route the boys would have typically taken home but didn’t find them. The sheriff’s office communication center sent out a telephone alert about the missing boys to 1,700 homes in the Rock Creek area.

At about 8:30 p.m. a man called 911 to report that he’d found the boys “wandering” in the area of 88th Street and Rock Creek Parkway. Deputies met the man and confirmed he had found the missing boys.

The boys told investigators they “decided to go for a walk in the area of Flatirons Mall instead of going home.”

After deputies determined there was no foul play, the boys were reunited with their parents.
