Negative ads accounted for 92 percent of all campaign commercials in Florida during the week leading up to the state’s presidential primary. The most heavily broadcast ad last weekend featured Tom Brokaw, the former NBC News anchor. Mitt Romney’s campaign used a 25-second clip from an old NBC newscast about Newt Gingrich’s House ethics rules violations. These figures, compiled by the Kantar Media Campaign Media Analysis Group, attest to the bitter turn the race took after the South Carolina primary. Gingrich, outspent, was the primary target. NBC News demanded, to no avail, that the ad featuring Brokaw be withdrawn.
