LONGMONT — — It’s been a month since the time clocks fell silent, and the shell of the Butterball turkey plant stands at First Avenue and Main Street as a dual reminder to all who pass by. It lingers with the memory of a now-closed half-century chapter in Longmont’s history, and it calls to mind the opportunity of what that nearly 27-acre industrial property might become in the future.

“We haven’t really had that much interest from prospects that are considering that property,” said John Cody, president and CEO of the Longmont Area Economic Council

He said one company in the food-processing industry has contacted his office requesting information about the plant, although that company is not a turkey meat company.

“We don’t expect to get many prospects,” Cody said. “That property has complexities.”

The main plant building is five stories and more than 50 years old, and it makes up about 300,000 of the total 389,000 square feet of the building space on the site. Other buildings and parking lots are separated by streets, and there’s a rail line running through the middle of the property.
