TB tests for all at Longmont High

LONGMONT — All Longmont High School students and staff will be tested for tuberculosis, as a “larger than expected number” have so far shown positive results for latent TB, the Longmont Times-Call reported, quoting a letter from principal Rick Olsen.

Denver Health announced in January that one student was diagnosed with active tuberculosis, prompting testing of students and staff who had contact with the patient.

Officials immediately tested 13 or 14 students and five staff members who had more than one class with that student, who has not been identified.

When several cases of latent TB were found in that group, health officials expanded the testing to all students and staff who had one class with the student — about 140 more students.

Latent TB is not contagious, but patients with it need to be treated so they do not develop active tuberculosis later, officials told the Times-Call. About 5 percent of latent TB cases become active within two years.

Olsen’s letter, sent to parents via e-mail Tuesday night, reported that no new active cases of TB have been found at Longmont High School.

Doherty High workers suspected of giving alcohol to minors

COLORADO SPRINGS — Three Doherty High School employees have been placed on unpaid administrative leave on suspicion of giving alcohol to minors, The Gazette reported.

Devra Ashby, spokeswoman for Colorado Springs School District 11, told the newspaper that the three employees are education support personnel but are not teachers.

The alleged incident when the minors were given alcohol did not take place on the school campus or during school hours, she said.

Man held after alleged threat

A Longmont man was arrested early Tuesday after he allegedly threatened two neighbors with sickles.

The Longmont Times-Call reported that Shaun Kinny, 23, is accused of declaring he had a “black belt” and would “end” the neighbors after they intervened in a fight between the man and his girlfriend. Kinny faces two counts of felony menacing.
