Colorado is bidding farewell to two longtime coaches.
John Nichols, who led Class 1A Lyons to football prominence, resigned Monday. Jim Capra, who has been in command of Arvada West baseball since the 1980s and coached Phillies star Roy Halladay, will step down after the season.
Nichols had a 16-year run with the Lions. They were state runners-up three times and 114-57 overall. Nichols said he may consider other jobs within the St. Vrain Valley District.
Capra, 55, has guided the Wildcats for a quarter century and will bow out in May. Arvada West won the 1994 big-school title, its only baseball crown. He will move on to Adams State, his alma mater, and restart its baseball program, which was discontinued when he was a freshman.
