LONGMONT, Colo.—The city of Longmont’s planning commission has recommended approving new rules for the oil and natural gas industry.

The Times-Call reports () the commission voted 4-3 Wednesday to recommend the new rules, plus an extended moratorium on drilling permits.

The rules would allow companies that agree to follow city standards that are tougher than what the state requires to shortcut the city’s approval process for oil and gas activity.

The City Council probably won’t take a final vote on the commission’s recommendations until March.

The moratorium is due to expire after April 17 if it isn’t extended.

The Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission enforces statewide rules on oil and gas development and has expressed concerns that some of Longmont’s proposed rules appear to step on the commission’s authority.
