DURANGO, Colo.—A bill introduced in the Colorado Senate would allow Indian tribal elders to work in public schools as teachers of their native languages.

Senate Bill 57 would allow schools to hire people fluent in native languages to teach those languages, even if they don’t have teaching licenses.

Sen. Suzanne Williams of Aurora is sponsoring the proposal. The Durango Herald reports ( ) the Senate Education Committee approved the Democrat’s bill this week.

Ute Mountain Ute tribe member Ernest House Jr. says he hopes the bill will allow Four Corners school districts to help a new generation of Ute and Navajo children.
