LONGMONT, Colo.—A disabled Longmont woman is fighting to keep her service cat after her apartment owner tried to charge fees.
Doctors say Audrey Warden needs the cat to recover from crippling health problems. Federal laws prevent landlords from discriminating against people with disabilities and allows someone with a disability to keep a companion animal free of charge if a medical professional says they need it.
According to KUSA-TV ( ), her landlord is demanding she pay a $400 pet deposit, a $250 pet fine, and $25-per-month pet rent, which Warden says she cannot afford.
The property manager is refusing to comment.
