LONGMONT — Kent Brown no longer has to keep a $2 million secret.

“My wife didn’t know who it was,” said the former Longmont museum director, referring to the donors who quietly gave $1 million to help build the Longmont Museum & Cultural Center at 400 Quail Road in 2000 and then another $1 million to help fund a planned auditorium.

Now the mask is off and another $750,000 is on the table. Bill and Lila Jean Stewart, the former owners of KLMO radio station, publicly upped the ante Thursday evening, in hopes of pushing the community to finish the $4 million auditorium project.

Between the gifts and the interest on them, about half of the $4 million has been raised. The City Council has pledged another $250,000 — half this year, half in 2013 — and a formal fundraising campaign is expected to start this summer.
