Getting your player ready...

Future Division I players dot the boys and girls rosters for The Show, Colorado’s annual high school basketball all-star games April 6 at the Pepsi Center. The boys game will feature nine future D-I players, led by CU signees Josh Scott (Lewis-Palmer), Wesley Gordon (Sierra) and Xavier Talton (Sterling).

“It will be fun just because everyone has good talent,” Gordon said. “I’m going to be on the floor with people who know what they’re doing. It will give me a sense of what it will be like to play in college.”

The boys game also will match rising sophomores Dominique Collier (Denver East) and Josh Perkins (Regis Jesuit) against each other. Considered the state’s top two recruits in the class of 2014, the close friends will be on opposing teams.

“We’re going to have to go at it with each other,” Collier said.

Perkins called being selected “one of my goals since I was a little kid.”

Collier, Scott, Gordon, Talton and Colorado Springs Christian’s Nate Engesser are two-time selections. Engesser has signed with the University of Denver.

Dick Katte, the longtime Denver Christian coach who is retiring after this season, will guide the Blue team in the boys game. Arapahoe’s Dan Snyder will coach the White team.

Ten future D-I players will play in the girls game, led by Duke-bound Katie Heckman of Regis Jesuit.

A trio of future Northern Colorado teammates — Jamie Derrieux (Grand Junction), Rebecca Howell (Bishop Machebeuf) and Bay’lee Purdy (Deer Trail) — will play for the Blue team.

“I’m really excited to play with them,” said Purdy, the state’s leading scorer with an average of 33.7 points.

A pair of future DU teammates — Kailey Edwards (Legacy) and Michaela Neuhaus (Highlands Ranch) — will play for the White team.

Pueblo South’s Mikala Gordon, a junior, is the lone nonsenior selected for the girls game. Grambling State-bound Alexus Johnson of Monarch is a three-time selection. Two-time picks are Purdy, Edwards, Heritage’s Lauren Huggins (signed with CU) and Palmer’s Taylor Torres.

Centaurus’ Jeff Jackson will coach the Blue team in the girls game. Pueblo South’s Shannon Lane will coach the White team. The girls game will be played before the Nuggets host Phoenix at 7 p.m. The boys game will follow the NBA game.

Teams for The Show are selected by media members across the state, including the The Denver Post, and by representatives of the Nuggets.
