Ouch. In a February survey of 20 U.S. cities, Denver residents came in at No. 1 for being the most anti-tourist. But also the most adventurous. Apparently, we don’t want anyone else to come here and experience Colorado’s outdoor fun.
LivingSocial Escapes, the travel branch of the daily deals site, asked 4,000 Americans in the top 20 media markets as well as 1,600 additional folks in Australia, Canada, Ireland and the United Kingdom a slew of questions, including their pick for worst tourists (one out of five Americans picked Americans) and whether they had ever stolen something from a hotel room (39 percent said yes, with towels at the top of the list, followed by bathrobes).
In Denver, 25 percent of respondents said they have experienced a weather disaster while on vacation, and we chose Leonardo Di Caprio as the person we would most like to travel with from the options of the most-followed celebrity Twitter users. The rest of the country picked Ellen DeGeneres.
Denverites did choose the same top world wonders to visit, however. We all went with Great Barrier Reef, Australia, as a first choice for dream vacation site, followed by the Eiffel Tower in France, the pyramids of Giza, Egypt, the Colosseum in Italy and Disney World in Florida.
What does it all mean? Clearly, that there are still people out there with enough time on their hands to fill out surveys. It must be the ones who aren’t checking their e-mail while on vacation, which, according to the survey, is 66 percent of us.
ONLY IN COLORADO
