ASPEN –  — Saturday was a historic day on Aspen Mountain.

The Aspen Skiing Co. was able to open the most terrain ever on the mountain, in the neighborhood of 705 acres, spokesman Jeff Hanle said. In addition to the 675 acres that are typically available for skiing and riding, Skico was able to open all of its gated terrain, as well, he said.

“Everything was open. That’s a big thing. A lot of people thought we’d never get the snow,” Hanle said.

Two feet of snow fell last week, with the biggest dump coming on Thursday night and into Friday. That allowed Skico to open all of the traditionally gated areas on Aspen Mountain: Bingo Glades, Trainor’s and Cone Dump 1 and 2. In addition, Skico opened terrain that is new this season — Spar Dump and Silver Queen Ridge, Hanle said. The gated terrain totals about 30 acres, according to Hanle.
