CENTENNIAL, Colo.—A man convicted of first-degree murder in the slaying of a man during an attempted robbery in Aurora has been sentenced to life in prison without possibility of parole.
A prosecutor said at a sentencing hearing Wednesday that 22-year-old Steven Earl Johnston was on probation for burglary when he and a co-conspirator tried to rob 18-year-old Jarrell “J.J.” Rivers in March 2010. Rivers and Johnston’s co-conspirator were killed in a shootout.
Jurors had convicted Johnston of first-degree murder, attempted aggravated robbery, and conspiracy to commit aggravated robbery.
Rivers’ mother, Rebecca Rivers, had sought the maximum sentence.
