Hawaii Lt. Governor Brian Schatz called a Colorado couple on Thursday evening to personally apologize for the disastrous end to their vacation on Monday.
Mike and Georgia Young were heading home after celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary in the islands when a freak storm hit the island of Kauai.
The heavy rains forced Hawaiian Airlines to cancel their flight and Kauai’s Lihue Airport was closed.
Instead of helping the couple and other stranded travelers find shelter, a security guard locked the senior citizens outside in the storm, forcing them to spend the night on the concrete floor of a nearby Red Cross shelter.
