FARMINGTON, N.M.—An 83-year-old Colorado man has died after he tried to make a left turn across a busy highway in northwest New Mexico and was hit by a semi-truck.

Aztec police Sgt. Joseph Gonzales says John Gustafson of Durango died late Friday morning from injuries he suffered when his sedan was hit broadside by the truck.

Gonzales tells the Farmington Daily-Times ( ) that it isn’t clear if Gustafson misjudged the speed of the oncoming big-rig when he turned left as the traffic light turned yellow. The truck driver told officers the light was turning but he was not able to stop in time.

There’s no indication that the truck driver was speeding or was impaired.

Gustafson had family in the Farmington area.
