COLORADO SPRINGS — A Colorado Springs woman testified Friday that she stood by while her 21-month-old daughter was repeatedly placed in a shower by a relative and hit with blasts of cold water from a portable showerhead held inches from the toddler’s face.

The last time Alexis Salaz was abused that day, she was bound with electrical tape and left unattended under a frigid stream for as long as an hour, her mother Samantha Salaz said on the stand.

The April 7 abuse caused Alexis to stop breathing, causing severe brain injuries. Alexis was considered medically dead until doctors managed to revive her, up to 50 minutes after she ceased breathing.

Salaz’s testimony came during the trial of Salaz’s aunt, Mary Horsley, who faces seven counts, including attempted murder charges. Horsley’s defense attorney, Ed Farry, has accused Salaz of being “solely and exclusively” responsible for abusing her daughter.
