COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—A Colorado Springs woman who faced charges over a grand-niece who sustained a brain injury has been convicted of child abuse resulting in serious injury.
Jurors acquitted Mary Horsley of attempted murder Friday but convicted her of child abuse. She also was convicted of abusing two grandchildren.
The Gazette reports ( ) defense attorney Ed Farry plans to appeal.
Horsley was charged after investigators said it appeared 21-month-old Alexis Salaz had been placed in a cold shower with tape over her eyes and mouth as punishment last year.
The girl’s mother and Horsley’s niece, 19-year-old Samantha Salaz, pleaded guilty to child abuse resulting in serious injury and received a 24-year prison sentence.
Farry had argued Samantha Salaz was to blame for the child’s injuries.
