GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.—Authorities say a GPS ankle monitor that was removed by a man before he shot and killed his estranged girlfriend in Mesa and then turned the gun on himself was functioning properly—at least from a technological standpoint.
The Grand Junction Daily Sentinel ( ) reports 47-year-old Robert Allen Matile was required to wear the monitor after he was arrested Jan. 16 on suspicion of domestic violence and for threatening to kill 52-year-old LaVonn Hoffman.
Sgt. Henry Stoffel with the Mesa County Sheriff’s Department says Matile managed to remove the monitor before he walked a quarter of a mile from his home to kill Hoffman on Feb. 2. The monitor was found in Matile’s home, still emitting a signal.
Authorities wouldn’t say how he removed the monitor without setting off an alert.
