ALMA, Colo.—Officials have identified a body found in the Ajax Mine in western Colorado.

The Park County Sheriff’s Office said Monday the body was that of Kevin Lawrence of Alma, who owned the mine.

Undersheriff Monte Gore says there was a partial collapse of the mine. The sheriff’s department says early reports indicate Lawrence died of exposure.

Crews had to postpone the rescue due to unstable conditions including avalanche risks. Gore says engineers were sent into the mine to determine if it was safe to continue the recovery. The operation was completed Saturday.

Lawrence’s body was found by his brother. Gore says the brother hiked up to the mine to look for Lawrence after being unable to reach him.
