A driver was taken to a hospital this morning after he was cut from the wreckage of his car.

The crash happened about 7 a.m. on I-225 near East 6th Avenue, said Lt. Charles DeShazer, an Aurora Police Department spokesman.

The driver of the 2009 Mitsubishi was northbound on I-225 at a high rate of speed — witnesses reported he was going 80 mph — when he lost control and slammed into the back of a semi-trailer, DeShazer said.

The roof of the car was crushed, and the driver had to be freed from the wreck by emergency responders.

The driver, who was bleeding from his nose, was taken to a nearby hospital. Further details on his injuries were not available.

He was cited for careless driving, DeShazer said.

The driver of the truck was not injured.
