CONIFER, Colo.—The wildfire that has grown to nearly 5 square miles southwest of Denver may have been started by a prescribed burn fanned to life by wind gusts.
A spokesman for the Colorado State Forest Service, Ryan Lockwood, said his agency conducted a prescribed burn on land belonging to the Denver Water Board as part of an ongoing attempt to reduce fire danger on Thursday.
He said the burns have been going on for the past year.
Lockwood referred questions to a supervisor about how the burn was being monitored.
