As demand for number crunchers continues to grow, so too do Colorado State University’s online degree offerings. The University has created a new online master’s degree program in applied statistics in response to growing industry and government needs for statisticians. The new 11-month program starts this fall and specifically targets career statisticians who aren’t looking to later earn a Ph.D.
“These are people who know what they need to hit the ground running,” said Professor Mary Meyer, who helped design the program. “We’re easing that transition with the new M.A.S. that will quickly prepare students to be competent practitioners of statistics, positioning them for a rewarding career in a growing job market.” May 1 is the deadline to apply for the Fall 2012 semester at Colorado State, and student Seth Johnson will be on the roster. Johnson chose CSU because he’s been waiting for a program like this. “Over the last six years, I have cultivated a finance education and professional experience in the field of information technology,” Johnson said. “I envision the Master of Applied Statistics program as an opportunity to develop the skills necessary to transition to a new career path. I have always had a passion for working with numbers, but it was not until recently that I realized I wanted to build my career around it.” Emphasizing the practical methods in statistics, the master’s program consists of 19 courses totaling 31 credits, and includes a three-week “boot camp” of intensive math and computing review immediately preceding the start of the program. Because the program is offered online, students can continue working while earning their degree, and be able to immediately apply what they’re learning to their careers throughout the program.
