DENVER—Police say a man arrested during a traffic stop died when balloons filled with a suspected narcotic burst open in his stomach.

The Denver medical examiner’s office Monday said a cause of death is pending toxicology tests. His name has not been released.

Police say officers arrested the man late Sunday after he became combative and attempted to assault an officer. Officers handcuffed the man and placed him in the backseat of a cruiser where he later appeared to be in medical distress.

He died after being transported by ambulance to a hospital.
