CONIFER, Colo.—Emergency calls from residents caught in the path of a raging wildfire show confusion and panic, including one resident who urged authorities to rescue a woman who apparently died in the fire.

According to police tapes obtained by KMGH-TV ( ), one resident expressed surprise after he was told it was a controlled burn, despite winds that reached 80 mph.

One of the friends of Ann Appel called 911, concerned for her safety because she was being treated for cancer, but there was no report that authorities were responding. Other people reported fires all around them and wanted to know if an evacuation had been ordered.

The Colorado State Forest Service has accepted responsibility for the fire, which charred 6 square miles this week and apparently killed three people.
